Why 4x4 Boards Are Your ATM
THE SHORT VERSION
The smallest board in Gambonanza = fastest wins per minute. If your stock is below 50, stop doing 6x6 and drop down to 4x4. This isn’t about winning pretty, it’s about winning cheap.
The 4x4 Advantage
| Factor | 4x4 Board | 6x6 Board |
|---|---|---|
| Avg Match Time | 2-3 minutes | 5-8 minutes |
| Stock/Minute | 12-18 stock/min | 4-6 stock/min |
| Gambit RNG | Less rolls = more predictable | More variance |
| Best For | Economy building | Boss prep |
Knight Aggro Opener (Fastest Start)
The opening that beats 90% of 4x4 games in 4 turns:
Turn 1: Move Knight to center (attacks 2 pieces)
Turn 2: Knight captures (or threatens capture)
Turn 3: Bring second piece forward
Turn 4: Checkmate or forced promotion
Why It Works on 4x4
- 4x4 boards have no room to retreat
- A Knight in the center attacks 2-3 pieces from turn 1
- Opponent can’t develop without losing a piece
- Games end before economy gambits even matter
Pro Tip
On 4x4, don’t bother with economy gambits in the first 2 turns. The match is too short to recoup the cost. Focus on attack gambits that end the game fast.
Farm Loop Timing
The optimal farm cycle:
- Match 1-3: Play Knight Aggro. Ignore economy. Build muscle memory.
- Match 4-6: Introduce 1-2 economy gambits (Double Down, Stock Split)
- Match 7+: Full optimization-attack openers into economy finish
Stock Projection (10 Matches)
| Match # | Opener | Stock Earned | Cumulative |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-3 | Knight Aggro | ~15/match | 45 |
| 4-6 | Aggro + 1 Economy | ~22/match | 111 |
| 7-10 | Full optimization | ~30/match | 231 |
Stock resets aren’t punishing on 4x4. If you lose a match, you’re back in the game within 3 minutes. Don’t get tilted-just queue the next 4x4 and go again.
Best Gambits for 4x4 Farming
Attack Gambits (Priority)
| Gambit | Cost | Why on 4x4 |
|---|---|---|
| Double Move | Medium | Two actions = game ends 1 turn sooner |
| Early Check | Low | Forces opponent to respond immediately |
| Knight Boost | Low | Turns Knight into unstoppable threat |
| Pawn Rush | Low | Overwhelms opponent on small board |
Economy Gambits (Use after Turn 3 only)
| Gambit | Cost | When to Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Double Down | Medium | Only if match extends past turn 5 |
| Stock Split | High | Farm runs only (not boss prep) |
| Interest Boost | Low | Always worth it for longer sessions |
What NOT to Do on 4x4
- Don’t play defensive gambits (no room to retreat anyway)
- Don’t invest in long-term economy gambits (match too short)
- Don’t play “fair” chess-the board is rigged for aggression
- Don’t promote pawns (wastes 1-2 turns you don’t have)
Speedrun Records
From my own runs, here are the benchmarks I’ve hit on the 4x4 board:
- Fastest 4x4 win (no gambits): 6 moves
- Fastest 4x4 with economy farming: 4 moves + 2 turns
- Highest stock/min record: ~22 stock/min (still trying to beat this)
When to Stop Farming 4x4
Move up to 6x6 when:
- You have stock >200
- You’re farming for boss prep (need board space)
- You want to test actual strategy
- 4x4 feels too easy (you’ll know when)
