This Is Not a Quick Primer-It’s Your Campaign Map
Gambonanza blends chess with roguelike progression in a way that’s incredibly satisfying-but the learning curve hits hard. This guide won’t drill you on micro-tactics. It tells you what to do and when to do it.
Verdict
Beginners make exactly two critical mistakes: over-expanding in the opening, and failing to transition in the mid-game. Fix those two things, and reaching Grand Master is just a matter of reps. If you need a shortcut, the Beginner Guide covers the 5 rules that carry you through your first 5 runs. Each boss phase demands a different approach - check the Boss Guide for phase-by-phase tactics. Difficulty Rating: -steep at first, but every run teaches you something.
Phase 1: Opening (3x3-4x4)
Goal
Build your economy foundation and fill Gambit slots.
Action Checklist
- Use recommended seeds: 1238513920 or 44488822
- Prioritize economy Gambits (Pawn Gambit, Gold Rush)
- Keep your King near center with at least 2 defensive pieces
- Do not expose your Queen early
Golden Opening Formula
Turns 1?: Expansion x2 + Gambit x1
Turns 4?: Economy x2 + Defense x1
Follow this ratio and you will almost never lose the opening phase.
Mid-game-pay attention to piece positioning and board control
What to Avoid
- Over-recruiting: Having more pieces than you can upgrade stalls your economy
- Skipping Gambits: Playing Gambit-light in the opening sets you up for a painful boss phase
- King in the open: One aggressive push and you’re dead before turn 8
Phase 2: Mid-Game (4x4-5x5)
Goal
Transition into a combat-ready configuration and prepare for your first boss.
Decision Tree
First boss is Jester?
Yes-Keep expanding, rush kill on 4x4 board
No-Switch to defensive formation, fill Gambit slots
Already have 8+ pieces on board?
Yes-Start clearing low-tier pieces, keep high-value ones
No-Keep expanding but manage pace
Common Pitfalls
- Mid Over-expansion: 10+ pieces on a 4x4 board with no gold to upgrade them-the #1 death sentence
- Ignoring Gambits: If you haven’t filled your Gambit slots by mid-game, you will not survive the first boss at 5x5
- Holding onto pawns: Low-tier pieces are dead weight past 4x4. Sell them without sentiment.
Phase 3: Boss Fights (5x5)
One-Liner Counters Per Boss
See the full Boss Strategy Guide for in-depth breakdowns. Quick reference:
| Boss | One-Liner Counter |
|---|---|
| Jester | Predictable rhythm-defend then punish |
| King of Spades | Without King Bind, drop offensive formation entirely |
| Blitzking | Grid Lock is your lifeline |
| Queen of Hearts | Mirror formation, exploit the reversal |
| Grand Master | Dual Gambit setup + trap strategy |
Boss Fight Mentality
If you lose to the same boss 3 times in a row, stop bashing your head against it. Check: is your Gambit configuration correct for this fight? Are your relics the right type? Swapping one Gambit often does more than swapping ten pieces.
Phase 4: Endgame (6x6+)
Transition Checklist
Sell all economy relics-Equip full combat relics-Open King hunting windows
Win Condition Checkpoints
Before entering 6x6, confirm:
| Condition | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Gambit slots | At least 2, ideally 3 |
| Combat relics | -4 |
| King position | Not exposed, has defensive cover |
| Core pieces | Queen + Rook x2 + Bishop x2 |
If you can’t meet these, lower your expectations and pursue a King-snipe comeback instead of a direct fight.
5 Mistakes Beginners Must Avoid
- “More pieces = better”-Quality over quantity, always
- “I’ll save my Gambit for later”-Gambits are for using, not hoarding
- “I’ll skip the relic shop”-First thing at every new board size: check the relic shop
- “Pawn promotion is always good”-Losing Pawn Gambit chain synergy can hurt more than it helps
- “King exposed = panic”-If you can shore up defense within 3 turns, you’re fine
