The Gambit System Rated, Ranked & Explained

150+ Gambits. Each one a rule-breaking chess power. But some are game-warping, and some are trap picks that look good but lose you the run. This guide tells you which is which. For Gambit combinations that work together, the Gambit Synergy Chains guide shows the top 5 proven pairings. The full Tier List ranks every Gambit from S to C for quick reference.

HOW TO READ THIS GUIDE
Every top Gambit gets a Meta Rating (S/A/B/C), Synergy Table (PieceTile combos), Phase Indicator (Early/Mid/Late), and Pro Tip (10+ hour insider knowledge).

Teleport

S EARLY GAME MID GAME LATE GAME

Instantly move any piece to any unoccupied square the single most versatile Gambit in the game.

Best with King Teleport king out of checkmate free life
Best with Queen Queen appears anywhere on the board instantly
Best with Rook Teleport rook to 7th rank for instant mate threats
Why it breaks the game: Teleport can move a piece onto a Gambit Square AND trigger its effect in the same move. Teleporting a knight onto a "Free Gambit" tile gives you the tile bonus + the knight's move, effectively doubling your turn value. This interaction alone makes Teleport the most abusable Gambit in the game.

The Ultimate Counter

S LATE GAME

1-turn god mode against ALL bosses. The single most important boss Gambit save for Phase 3.

Best with Any piece Works universally zero positioning requirements
Best with King Counteractive push king forward safely for 1 turn
Best with Queen Maximum offense during the invulnerability window
Why it breaks the game: The Ultimate Counter doesn't actually make you invulnerable it makes your pieces "invisible" to boss targeting. The boss still takes their turn but wastes it moving aimlessly. Use this turn to reposition ALL your pieces aggressively, because the boss literally can't see them.

Heal Board

S LATE GAME

Return all captured pieces to the board the ultimate comeback mechanic.

Best with Sacrificed Knights Knights you traded away come back in flanking position
Best with Sacrificed Pawns Pawns return ON the back rank instant promotion setup
Best with Sacrificed Queen Queen comes back and threatens everything
Why it breaks the game: Pieces returned by Heal Board are placed on YOUR choice of empty squares, not their original positions. Deliberately sacrifice pieces in bad positions early, then Heal Board them into perfect attacking formations. It's not a recovery tool it's a repositioning tool disguised as healing.

A-Tier Run-Defining Gambits

These define your build strategy. Prioritize them in every shop.

Backstab

ACapture a piece from behind, ignoring ALL protection. Essential attack tool.
Best PiecesBest TilesWhy It Works
KnightBehind-target tilesKnights can reach “behind” positions that other pieces can’t
BishopDiagonal flank tilesAttacks from angles that are hard to calculate defensively
RookBack rank tilesRook slides behind entire enemy formation
MID GAME Shines when positions develop and pieces cluster around defenders.
Only 10h+ players know:
Only 10h+ players know: Backstab + King’s Shield used on the SAME piece = invulnerable assassin. The piece is shielded from reprisal while Backstab gives it free kills. This combo works on literally every non-boss board after turn 6.

Chain Capture

AOne capture triggers automatic second capture. Devastating in tight positions.
Best PiecesBest TilesWhy It Works
QueenCenter tilesCaptures one piece, chain-captures the defender behind it
Knight (2+)Clustered tilesKnights chain through packed positions efficiently
RookOpen filesClears entire ranks in one turn
EARLY GAME MID GAME Effective from turn 1 if pieces cluster. Diminishes on open boards.
Only 10h+ players know:
Only 10h+ players know: Chain Capture’s trigger range is 2 squares, not adjacent. This means you can chain into diagonally “protected” pieces that the enemy thought were safe. Always check square 2 for chain potential before your capture.

King’s Shield

AKing becomes invulnerable for 2 turns. Keeps stock safe, prevents checkmate.
Best PiecesBest TilesWhy It Works
KingAny safe tileThe king is the centerpiece protect your investment
Pawns near kingAdjacent tilesPawn wall + King’s Shield = fortress for 2 turns
Economy buildsAny tileStock value is tied to king survival
EARLY GAME MID GAME Safety net at all stages. Most forgiving Gambit for new players.
Only 10h+ players know:
Only 10h+ players know: King’s Shield doesn’t just protect the king it prevents stock loss on king capture for 2 turns. This means you can aggressively double down your stock, pop King’s Shield, and go ALL-IN on offense without worrying about losing your economy. Risk-free aggression.

Queen’s Gambit Counter

ANegates Queen boss's promotion ability. Turns a 4-star fight into a 2-star fight.
Best PiecesBest TilesWhy It Works
Any pieceCenter control tilesDeny center to limit queen’s base damage
Pawn rushersPromotion squaresBlocks her promotion, enables YOUR promotion
RookOpen filesFree to pressure without fear of instant queen conversion
MID GAME Boss-specific. Only equip before Queen Gambit fight.
Only 10h+ players know:
Only 10h+ players know: Queen’s Gambit Counter also works against Pawn Storm promotions. If you’re going Pawn Storm Queen Gambit back-to-back, this one Gambit neutralizes both bosses’ most dangerous mechanic.

Through the Ranks

ARook/Queen moves through up to 5 squares, triggers Gambit effects at each.
Best PiecesBest TilesWhy It Works
RookOpen filesThrough 4 squares = 4 Gambit effects triggered in one move
QueenDiagonal filesQueen crosses more tiles, more effects
Pawn wallsBoard edgesClears pawns while triggering bonuses
LATE GAME Needs open board. Build toward this it's not an early-game tool.
Only 10h+ players know:
Only 10h+ players know: Through the Ranks triggers the tile effect of EVERY tile it passes through, not just the Gambit effect. On a board with 3+ Gambit tiles in a straight line, this one move can generate enough value to win the entire match. Scout boards for Gambit tile alignment.

B-Tier Strong Situational Picks

These are excellent in the right build. Don’t force them into every deck.

Knight+Bishop Combo B

Move a piece using Knight AND Bishop range simultaneously. Insane coverage, slow to set up.

MID GAME

Best Pieces: Knights, queens
Best Tiles: Center, diagonal control tiles
Weakness: Requires both piece types alive on board

💡 PRO TIP: Use this on a pawn 1 square from promotion. It can promote to ANYTHING reachable by a knight+bishop far more promotion options than normal.

Jackpot Gambit B

Triple stock value + free Boss Gambit. Best used RIGHT before boss fights.

LATE GAME

Best Pieces: Any (economy Gambit)
Best Tiles: Safe haven tiles
Weakness: Useless on non-boss boards

💡 PRO TIP: Jackpot Gambit's boss Gambit reward is NOT random it always gives you the counter for the NEXT boss you fight. Sequence your boss order to control which counter you get.

Steal Investment B

Take 50% of opponent’s stock. Devastating in economy-focused runs.

MID GAME

Best Pieces: Economy builders
Best Tiles: Investment tiles
Weakness: Low-value against poor opponents

💡 PRO TIP: Steal Investment works on BOSS stock pools. Bosses accumulate stock from their wins too. Stealing from a rich boss = massive windfall.

Double Down B

Double your current stock. Simple, reliable, always useful.

EARLY GAME MID GAME

Best Pieces: Economy builds
Best Tiles: Any
Weakness: Low base stock = low value

💡 PRO TIP: Never Double Down at less than 50 stock. The return is mathematically bad below 50. Wait until you hit 80+ stock Double Down immediately Steal Investment for maximum compound growth.

C-Tier Niche/Filler Gambits

These have their place but shouldn’t be build priorities.

Undo Move C

Reverse your last move. Decent safety net, but occupies a slot that could be an S-tier. Only pick if your deck is 20+ cards and you have room.

EARLY GAME

Gravity Flip C

Invert movement directions for 1 turn. High skill ceiling but affects both players. Fun but inconsistent you’ll lose more runs than you’ll win with this.

MID GAME

Surround C

Capture if enemy is surrounded on 2+ sides. Too position-dependent to be reliable. OK in swarm builds, dead in open positions.

MID GAME

Pierce Through C

Capture and continue through. Good with bishops, weak with everything else. Upgrade to B-tier if you’re running a bishop-heavy deck.

For your first 10 runs, prioritize these Gambits in this exact order:

  1. Teleport S buy it the moment you see it
  2. Backstab A 2nd shop visit, every time
  3. King’s Shield A protects your stock investment
  4. Double Down B economy amplifier
  5. Knight+Bishop Combo B flexible 5th pick
Only 10h+ players know:
Only 10h+ players know: The shop’s Gambit rotation is NOT random. Every 5th shop visit guarantees an S or A-tier Gambit. Time your economy spikes (Double Down, Jackpot) to hit the shop on multiples of 5 visits, and you’ll walk into free top-tier picks every time.
