The Gambit System Rated, Ranked & Explained
150+ Gambits. Each one a rule-breaking chess power. But some are game-warping, and some are trap picks that look good but lose you the run. This guide tells you which is which. For Gambit combinations that work together, the Gambit Synergy Chains guide shows the top 5 proven pairings. The full Tier List ranks every Gambit from S to C for quick reference.
Every top Gambit gets a Meta Rating (S/A/B/C), Synergy Table (PieceTile combos), Phase Indicator (Early/Mid/Late), and Pro Tip (10+ hour insider knowledge).

Teleport
Instantly move any piece to any unoccupied square the single most versatile Gambit in the game.
The Ultimate Counter
1-turn god mode against ALL bosses. The single most important boss Gambit save for Phase 3.
Heal Board
Return all captured pieces to the board the ultimate comeback mechanic.
A-Tier Run-Defining Gambits
These define your build strategy. Prioritize them in every shop.
Backstab
| Best Pieces | Best Tiles | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Knight | Behind-target tiles | Knights can reach “behind” positions that other pieces can’t |
| Bishop | Diagonal flank tiles | Attacks from angles that are hard to calculate defensively |
| Rook | Back rank tiles | Rook slides behind entire enemy formation |
Only 10h+ players know: Backstab + King’s Shield used on the SAME piece = invulnerable assassin. The piece is shielded from reprisal while Backstab gives it free kills. This combo works on literally every non-boss board after turn 6.
Chain Capture
| Best Pieces | Best Tiles | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Queen | Center tiles | Captures one piece, chain-captures the defender behind it |
| Knight (2+) | Clustered tiles | Knights chain through packed positions efficiently |
| Rook | Open files | Clears entire ranks in one turn |
Only 10h+ players know: Chain Capture’s trigger range is 2 squares, not adjacent. This means you can chain into diagonally “protected” pieces that the enemy thought were safe. Always check square 2 for chain potential before your capture.
King’s Shield
| Best Pieces | Best Tiles | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| King | Any safe tile | The king is the centerpiece protect your investment |
| Pawns near king | Adjacent tiles | Pawn wall + King’s Shield = fortress for 2 turns |
| Economy builds | Any tile | Stock value is tied to king survival |
Only 10h+ players know: King’s Shield doesn’t just protect the king it prevents stock loss on king capture for 2 turns. This means you can aggressively double down your stock, pop King’s Shield, and go ALL-IN on offense without worrying about losing your economy. Risk-free aggression.
Queen’s Gambit Counter
| Best Pieces | Best Tiles | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Any piece | Center control tiles | Deny center to limit queen’s base damage |
| Pawn rushers | Promotion squares | Blocks her promotion, enables YOUR promotion |
| Rook | Open files | Free to pressure without fear of instant queen conversion |
Only 10h+ players know: Queen’s Gambit Counter also works against Pawn Storm promotions. If you’re going Pawn Storm Queen Gambit back-to-back, this one Gambit neutralizes both bosses’ most dangerous mechanic.
Through the Ranks
| Best Pieces | Best Tiles | Why It Works |
|---|---|---|
| Rook | Open files | Through 4 squares = 4 Gambit effects triggered in one move |
| Queen | Diagonal files | Queen crosses more tiles, more effects |
| Pawn walls | Board edges | Clears pawns while triggering bonuses |
Only 10h+ players know: Through the Ranks triggers the tile effect of EVERY tile it passes through, not just the Gambit effect. On a board with 3+ Gambit tiles in a straight line, this one move can generate enough value to win the entire match. Scout boards for Gambit tile alignment.
B-Tier Strong Situational Picks
These are excellent in the right build. Don’t force them into every deck.
Knight+Bishop Combo
Move a piece using Knight AND Bishop range simultaneously. Insane coverage, slow to set up.
Best Pieces: Knights, queens
Best Tiles: Center, diagonal control tiles
Weakness: Requires both piece types alive on board
Jackpot Gambit
Triple stock value + free Boss Gambit. Best used RIGHT before boss fights.
Best Pieces: Any (economy Gambit)
Best Tiles: Safe haven tiles
Weakness: Useless on non-boss boards
Steal Investment
Take 50% of opponent’s stock. Devastating in economy-focused runs.
Best Pieces: Economy builders
Best Tiles: Investment tiles
Weakness: Low-value against poor opponents
Double Down
Double your current stock. Simple, reliable, always useful.
Best Pieces: Economy builds
Best Tiles: Any
Weakness: Low base stock = low value
C-Tier Niche/Filler Gambits
These have their place but shouldn’t be build priorities.
Undo Move
Reverse your last move. Decent safety net, but occupies a slot that could be an S-tier. Only pick if your deck is 20+ cards and you have room.
Gravity Flip
Invert movement directions for 1 turn. High skill ceiling but affects both players. Fun but inconsistent you’ll lose more runs than you’ll win with this.
Surround
Capture if enemy is surrounded on 2+ sides. Too position-dependent to be reliable. OK in swarm builds, dead in open positions.
Pierce Through
Capture and continue through. Good with bishops, weak with everything else. Upgrade to B-tier if you’re running a bishop-heavy deck.
