##Gambonanza Tier List v1.0 Every Gambit Ranked

?? Must-Pick Gambits to Break the Game in v1.0
Not all Gambits are created equal. Three picks are literally game-warping the rest are filler, traps, or niche. Here's exactly where to spend your stock.

For context on how these fit into a full-game strategy, the Beginner Guide walks through early-game Gambit selection from scratch. Each tier also maps to specific Gambit cards - the All Gambits Guide has the full catalog with synergy pairings.

S-Tier Game-Warping Gambits

These three Gambits fundamentally rewrite the rules of the game. If you see one in the shop, mortgage everything. Build your entire run around them. Without exaggeration, having one of these doubles your win rate. Having two makes the game trivial.
Selection rate among top players: 97%+

1 Teleport-? The Best Gambit in the Game

SInstantly move any piece to any unoccupied square. The single most versatile Gambit.

Why it’s S-Tier: Teleport is the only Gambit with zero positioning requirements, zero cooldown, and universal application. It’s an escape tool, a setup tool, a combo enabler, and a checkmate engine all in one card. No other Gambit covers this much ground.

EARLY
MID
LATE

Best synergies: King (escape checkmate), Queen (appear anywhere instantly), Rook (back rank mate threats)

Pro Tip: Teleport + Gambit Square = double value. Moving a knight onto a “Free Gambit” tile via Teleport triggers both the tile effect AND the knight’s move effectively doubling your turn.

2 The Ultimate Counter-? Boss Killer #1

S1-turn god mode against ALL bosses. The single most important boss Gambit.

Why it’s S-Tier: Works on every boss, every phase, every difficulty. Zero setup, zero positioning. Pop it in Phase 3 of any boss fight and you get a free turn of pure aggression. No other Gambit provides this level of guaranteed boss insurance.

LATE

Best synergies: Any piece (works universally), King (safe aggression push)

Pro Tip: The Ultimate Counter doesn’t make you invulnerable it makes your pieces “invisible” to boss targeting. The boss wastes their turn while you reposition everything aggressively.

3 Heal Board-? The Comeback King

SReturn ALL captured pieces to the board on your choice of empty squares.

Why it’s S-Tier: Heal Board scales with failure the more pieces you’ve lost, the more value it generates. In long runs where attrition is the real boss, this single Gambit can turn a losing board into a crushing victory. The fact that YOU choose where pieces return makes it a repositioning tool disguised as healing.

LATE

Best synergies: Sacrificed Knights (return in flanking position), Pawns (return on back rank = instant promotion)

Pro Tip: Deliberately sacrifice pieces in bad positions early, then Heal Board them into perfect attacking formations. It’s not a recovery tool it’s a repositioning tool disguised as healing.

A-Tier Run-Defining Gambits

These Gambits define your build. You don't build around them they build around you. Prioritize them in every shop. An A-tier Gambit in the right deck is often stronger than a bad S-tier pick that doesn't fit your strategy.
Selection rate among top players: 80-95%

Backstab Essential Attack Tool

ACapture a piece from behind, ignoring ALL protection.

Best with: Knight (reaches behind positions others can’t), Bishop (hard-to-read diagonal flanks), Rook (clears entire back rank)

Phase: MID GAME

Pro Tip: Backstab + King’s Shield on the SAME piece = invulnerable assassin. The piece is shielded from reprisal while Backstab gives free kills. Works on every non-boss board after turn 6.

Chain Capture Multi-Kill Machine

AOne capture triggers automatic second capture.

Best with: Queen (chain through clustered defenders), Knight x2 (tight positions), Rook (clear entire ranks)

Phase: EARLY GAME MID GAME

Pro Tip: Chain trigger range is 2 squares, not adjacent. You can chain INTO diagonally protected pieces. Always check square 2 for chain potential.

King’s Shield Fortress Mode

AKing invulnerable for 2 turns. Prevents checkmate AND stock loss.

Best with: King (obviously), Pawns near king (fortress wall), Economy builds (stock value tied to king survival)

Phase: EARLY GAME MID GAME

Pro Tip: King’s Shield prevents stock loss on king capture for 2 turns. Pop this, then go ALL-IN on offense without worrying about your economy. Risk-free aggression.

Queen’s Gambit Counter Boss-Specific MVP

ANegates Queen boss's promotion ability. Turns 4-star 2-star fight.

Best with: Any piece (center control), Pawn rushers (block her promotion, enable yours), Rook (open file pressure)

Phase: MID GAME

Pro Tip: Also works against Pawn Storm promotions. Going Pawn Storm Queen Gambit back-to-back? One Gambit neutralizes BOTH bosses’ most dangerous mechanic.

Through the Ranks Value Train

ARook/Queen moves through 5 squares, triggers Gambit effects at EACH.

Best with: Rook (open files), Queen (diagonal files = more crosses), Pawn walls (clear + bonuses)

Phase: LATE GAME

Pro Tip: Triggers the tile effect of EVERY tile it passes through, not just Gambit effects. On a board with 3+ Gambit tiles in a straight line, this one move wins the match.

B-Tier Strong Situational Picks

Excellent in the right build. Don't force them pick them when they fit. A B-tier pick in the perfect deck outperforms an A-tier pick that's sitting in your hand unused.
Selection rate among top players: 50-75%

Knight+Bishop Combo B

Move using Knight AND Bishop range. Insane coverage, slow to set up.

Phase: MID GAME Best with: Knights, queens / Center, diagonal tiles Downside: Both piece types must be alive

-? Use on a pawn 1 square from promotion for maximum promotion options.

Jackpot Gambit B

Triple stock value + free Boss Gambit. Best right BEFORE boss fights.

Phase: LATE GAME Best with: Any piece (pure economy Gambit) Downside: Useless on non-boss boards

-Always gives the counter for your NEXT boss. Sequence boss order to control which counter you get.

Steal Investment B

Take 50% of opponent’s stock. Devastating in economy runs.

Phase: MID GAME Best with: Economy builders / Investment tiles Downside: Low value against poor opponents

-? Works on BOSS stock pools too. Stealing from a rich boss = massive windfall.

Double Down B

Double your current stock. Simple, reliable.

Phase: EARLY GAME MID GAME Best with: Economy builds / Any tile Downside: Low base stock = low value

-? Never Double Down below 50 stock. Wait for 80+ Double Down Steal Investment for compound growth.

Sacrifice for Strength B

Sacrifice a piece to massively empower remaining pieces.

Phase: MID GAME LATE GAME Best with: Swarm builds, Pawn-heavy decks Downside: You’re down one piece permanently

Bishop’s Blind B

Boss-specific: disables diagonal attacks from the target boss.

Phase: MID GAME Best with: Bishop/diagonal-heavy builds Downside: Only useful against one boss

King’s Counter B

Boss-specific: required for the King boss fight.

Phase: LATE GAME Best with: King-focused builds Downside: Dead slot against any other boss

Rook’s Wall B

Boss-specific: creates a rook fortress wall against boss charge.

Phase: MID GAME Best with: Rook-heavy builds Downside: Must be drawn early in the boss fight

Knight’s Parry B

Boss-specific: parries knight boss’s forking attacks.

Phase: MID GAME Best with: Knight builds / Fork-heavy boards Downside: Requires good positioning

C-Tier Niche / Filler Gambits

These have their place but it's a small place. Only pick if your deck has room and the situation is perfect. Never prioritize them. Never reroll to find them.
Selection rate among top players: 5-25%

Undo Move C

Reverse your last move. Decent safety net but takes a slot that could be S-tier. Only pick if: Your deck is 20+ cards and you have room. Phase: EARLY GAME

Gravity Flip C

Invert movement for 1 turn. High skill ceiling but affects BOTH players equally. Only pick if: You’re specifically memeing or speedrunning. Phase: MID GAME

Surround C

Capture if enemy is surrounded on 2+ sides. Too position-dependent. Only pick if: You’re running a swarm/knight spam build. Phase: MID GAME

Pierce Through C

Capture and continue through. Decent with bishops, weak otherwise. Only pick if: You’re running a bishop-heavy deck (upgrades to B-tier). Phase: EARLY GAME

Gambler’s Strike C

High-risk, high-reward attack. Can one-shot bosses or miss entirely. Only pick if: You’re restarting the run anyway and want to yolo. Phase: LATE GAME
