Strategy Guide-Rated Builds & Proven Tactics

THE GAMBONANZA MINDSET
This is NOT chess. It's a deckbuilding roguelike that pretends to be chess. If you approach it like a chess game, you lose. If you approach it like Slay the Spire with pieces, you win. This guide is built on that principle.

Opening Builds-Ranked & Explained

Three proven openers. Pick one per run and commit.

Build #1: Knight Aggro S

SHighest win rate opening. Aggressive knight development into early checkmate threats.
StepMoveWhy
1Develop both knights to centerKnights on d4/e4 dominate 4x4 and 6x6 boards
2Pawn push to clear diagonalOpens bishop + clears knight’s second L-jump
3Knight+Bishop Combo GambitMaximum reach-threaten 6+ squares simultaneously
4Backstab on exposed pieceKill the defender, ignore protection
5Checkmate with knight+queenFinish before opponent’s board develops
EARLY GAME Strongest turns 1-8. Falls off if game goes past move 15.

Best against: Non-boss boards, Rook Rook, Bishop Bluku
Weak against: Queen Gambit (she eats aggressive knights), King of Spades

Only 10h+ players know:
Only 10h+ players know: On 4x4 boards, Knight Aggro can win in 4 moves against the AI. Open d4 knight-e4 knight-Backstab on f-pawn-checkmate. The AI literally cannot respond in time on boards smaller than 6x6. This is your speedrun opener.

Build #2: Pawn Wall Defense A

AMost consistent build. Survive early, dominate late. Lower win rate but higher survival.
StepMoveWhy
1Push center pawns (d4, e4)Control the only squares that matter
2Develop bishops behind pawnsRanged support while pawns block
3Castle if possibleKing safety-economy protection
4Sacrifice for StrengthTurn pawn wall into mobility buff
5Promote pawn-Queen with Heal BoardEndgame conversion
MID GAME LATE GAME Weak early, unstoppable late. Needs patience.

Best against: Boss fights (survives longer), Queen Gambit
Weak against: Aggressive AIs that punish slow development

Only 10h+ players know:
Only 10h+ players know: Pawn Wall + King’s Shield creates an exploit where the AI wastes ALL its Gambits trying to break through. The AI prioritizes your king, but when it’s shielded AND walled, it will burn 5+ Gambits on futile attacks while your bishops destroy everything from behind the wall.

Build #3: Economy Rush B

BHigh-risk build. Prioritize stock over board position. Dominate through purchases.
StepMoveWhy
1Play safe, minimize piece lossesEvery lost piece = less stock
2Double Down at 50+ stockCompound your first big win
3Steal Investment from rich opponentEconomy theft is faster than earning
4Buy S-tier Gambits in bulkOut-gear the opponent
5Win through raw card advantage10 Gambits vs their 3 = auto-win
EARLY GAME LATE GAME Risky in mid-game because you're under-equipped. If you survive, you snowball.

Best against: Boss prep runs, long campaigns
Weak against: Early aggressive AIs that don’t let you farm

Only 10h+ players know:
Only 10h+ players know: The Pawn Lottery expected value peaks at exactly 37 stock input. Input less and you lose to variance; input more and the returns diminish. Always bet exactly 37 stock in the Pawn Lottery for mathematically optimal long-term returns.

Deck Composition Math

Deck SizeWin Rate*Play StyleRecommended For
12-18 cards~70%Hyper-aggressiveSpeedruns, 4x4 boards, experienced players
19-25 cards~75%BalancedMost players, most runs-this is the sweet spot
26-35 cards~60%Control/late gameBoss runs, new players learning
36+ cards~45%UnfocusedAvoid-dilution kills win rates

*Community-estimated. A focused 15-card deck of S/A-tier Gambits beats a 35-card deck with mixed tiers every time.

THE GOLDEN RULE OF DECK SIZE

Every Gambit after #22 reduces your chance of drawing your best 5 Gambits. A bloated deck isn’t versatile-it’s diluted. Keep it under 22 cards unless your build specifically requires more.

Reading the Board-Phase by Phase

Turn 1-8: Development

Focus: Get 3+ pieces into active positions

  • Knights first, then bishops, pawns for coverage
  • DON’T bring out queen before turn 5
  • Count enemy Gambits used-they burn them faster than you think
  • If you’re behind after 8 turns, the board was wrong for your build

Turn 9-20: Execution

Focus: Coordinated attacks, Gambit chains

  • Look for 2-in-1 captures (Backstab + Chain)
  • If ahead: simplify. Trade pieces 1:1.
  • If behind: create chaos. Flip board with Teleport.
  • This is where most games are won or lost

Turn 21+: Endgame

Focus: Checkmate or survive

  • Push pawns to promotion-it’s your best path to victory
  • King activity matters now. Move king toward the action.
  • If winning: ladder mate with rooks
  • If losing: stall, look for comeback Gambit

Boss Fights: Special

Focus: Pattern recognition over aggression

  • Scout first move (throwaway piece)
  • Track boss Gambit cooldowns
  • Use boss counters on the specific turns they matter
  • Survive > Kill fast. Bosses have limited Gambit pools and WILL run out.

Tilt Management

THE 3-LOSS RULE

If you lose 3 runs in a row, STOP. Your decision-making is compromised. Take 10 minutes, review one replay, identify exactly which Gambit you should have bought instead. Come back fresh.

Common tilt mistakes:

  • Buying expensive Gambits out of frustration
  • Rushing into boss fights under-prepared
  • Ignoring shop rerolls when your build is stuck
  • Playing the same opener after it’s clearly not working
