Why a Tutorial Revamp Was Needed
Gambonanza’s original tutorial was built for the 1.0 launch and had several gaps that new players consistently reported as frustrating. The Stock mechanic, for example, was mentioned in passing but never fully explained – leaving players wondering why they couldn’t keep buying pieces. Gambit triggering conditions were described with vague language like “has a chance to” without explaining what affected that chance. And Crumble Mode, one of the most punishing mechanics in the game, had zero explanation in the tutorial at all.
In player surveys on the Gambonanza Subreddit and Discord, approximately 40% of new players said they lost their first run to either running out of Stock without understanding why, or triggering Crumble Mode accidentally. The v1.3.0 tutorial revamp directly targets these pain points.
What Changed in the Tutorial
Based on player reports and community testing, the revamp focuses on seven key areas:
- Stock management explanation – The tutorial now explicitly explains how Stock capacity works and when to sell pieces, with a visual indicator showing Stock usage
- Gambit timing – New players are walked through Gambit triggering conditions more clearly, with visual examples showing when a Gambit will and won’t trigger
- Crumble Mode primer – Quick intro to the Crumble timer so new players don’t lose their first board without understanding why
- Boss preparation – Hint to enter boss fights with Stock reserves instead of gambling everything before the fight
- Piece movement basics – Improved visuals for how each piece type (PAWN, KNIGHT, BISHOP, ROOK, QUEEN) moves, particularly useful for players who only know basic chess
- Tile effect overview – Basic explanation of special tiles (Gold, Trap, Bless, Protect) that was completely absent in v1.2’s tutorial
- Economy pacing – The new tutorial suggests when to buy vs. when to save, a common pain point that the old tutorial completely ignored
What’s Still Missing
The tutorial still doesn’t cover:
- Specific Gambit combos (too many permutations in 200+ Gambits). See our Gambit Synergy Guide.
- Build archetypes. See Build Guide for that.
- Boss-specific strategies. See Boss Guide.
- Advanced tile mechanics. See Tile Control Guide.
- Board customization (introduced v1.2.0, still not mentioned in v1.3 tutorial). See Custom Boards Guide.
What Players Still Get Wrong After Tutorial
Even with the revamp, these are common mistakes new players make that the tutorial doesn’t fully prevent:
- Hoarding Gambits – They don’t realize you can only hold 3 and should sell weak ones
- Ignoring Stock cap – They fill Stock with PAWNs and can’t afford promotions later
- Not reading ADJACENT keywords – They expect diagonal triggers when it’s orthogonal only
- Rushing Crumble Mode – They play too fast and trigger Crumble before the board is ready
