What Landed in 1.4.0
This is every material change pulled straight from the official Steam news posts (1.4.0, plus hotfixes 1.4.0e and 1.4.0f), and what each one means for your next run.
Enhanced AI Mode (new)
Found under Main Menu -> Settings -> Extras. It answers a long-running complaint that enemy behavior felt erratic.
- Smarter tactical play: enemies play conventional, deliberate chess, making fewer disadvantageous trades and avoiding obvious blunders.
- Hazard awareness: the AI actively avoids crumble tiles when it can, and Crumble Mode triggers later in the match.
- Pure strategy: the ELITE modifier is disabled for a tighter, strictly logical game.
The Graveyard (new)
Ever lost a run because a key piece snapped off on turn two? The Graveyard gives you a second chance.
- Holds the last 5 chess pieces you lost during the run.
- You spend money to buy them back, and each recovered piece raises the cost of the remaining ones.
- Difficulty scaling: available on PAWN to help you refine builds. Starting from KNIGHT, the Graveyard disappears via the Strain system, because at higher tiers mistakes should hurt.
Quality-of-Life (the quiet MVP)
- Skip Boss introductions.
- Skip Gachapon and Piece Wheel animations.
- New Extra settings category.
- Unlock All option.
- Erase Save Data option.
- New visual effect when Crumble Mode starts.
- New visual effect when only one piece remains on the board.
- Toggle for algebraic notation (column/row labels) next to tiles.
New Enemy Waves
Several new enemy formations joined the enemy pool to increase run variety. The devs did not enumerate each formation, so the practical takeaway is: do not hard-code your openers against the old wave set. Re-scout every run.
Balance Changes
| Change | Before | After | Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yin’s Gambit trigger | 1/3 | 1/2 | Reliable now. Strong in capture-focused builds. |
| Yang’s Gambit trigger | 1/3 | 1/2 | Same bump as Yin. Pair them for consistency. |
| Rear Up’s Gambit reward | +$2 | +$4 | Double economy on promotion. |
| Waiting vs Stasis enemy | Adds to Crumble counter | No longer adds | Stasis lanes are safer to sit on. |
| Promote into PAWN | Not possible | Now possible | Enables Phantom-Tile loops via Clown’s Gambit. |
Gambit Revamps
| Gambit | What Changed |
|---|---|
| Clown’s Gambit | Replaces War Horse. Promoting to a non-QUEEN now spawns a tile by piece: ROOK -> Protective, KNIGHT -> Trap, BISHOP -> Blessing, KING -> Golden, PAWN -> Phantom (yes, that is possible). |
| Enigma’s Gambit | Capturing on a tile switches its color (BLACK turns WHITE, WHITE turns BLACK). |
| AFK’s Gambit | Improved. If your Stock is full, new pieces are placed directly on the board instead of being lost. |
Bug Fixes Worth Knowing
- Typo fixes for Impossible Choice’s, Nemo’s Pawns, and Grandma’s Gift Gambits.
- CJK (Chinese, Korean, Japanese) font fix where characters from another language leaked into text.
- Several Steam Achievements that failed to trigger when Gambits modified their conditions (for example, 9 Kings with Anarchist’s Gambit) now work.
- Joker’s Gambit could sometimes fail to generate Trap Tiles randomly; fixed.
- Duplicate Gambits no longer appear in the Shop.
- AFK’s Gambit no longer resets after a Stalemate.
Hotfixes
- 1.4.0e: Enhanced AI setting was sometimes inaccessible; cursor could disappear; controller navigation in Settings improved; added a custom Gambo cursor.
- 1.4.0f: Graveyard could get stuck when quickly hidden after buying the last available piece, or after pressing NEXT and hiding it immediately.
What This Means for Your Builds
- Chess purists: Enhanced AI Mode is finally your mode. Just accept the no-achievements tradeoff.
- PAWN farmers: the Graveyard removes the worst variance. You can recover a sniped Queen and keep your synergy alive.
- Economy builds: Yin, Yang, and Rear Up are all strictly better. Rear Up doubling to +$4 makes promotion-tempo builds real.
- Phantom/board-control: Clown’s Gambit plus promote-into-PAWN is a brand-new engine. Expect tier movement here.
